The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Mindat, recently designated a Catholic cathedral in Myanmar, was bombed by the military regime last week amid ongoing conflicts in the region. The airstrikes severely damaged the church, located in Chin, Myanmar’s only Christian-majority state. Although the attack occurred on February 6, news of it emerged only recently. The church’s roof and stained-glass windows were destroyed, rendering it unusable, according to Fides, the information service of the Pontifical Mission Societies. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the area had been evacuated. Less than two weeks prior, on January 25, Pope Francis had designated the church a cathedral for the newly formed Diocese of Mindat. Local Catholics were preparing for upcoming liturgical celebrations, including the consecration of the newly appointed bishop, Fr. Augustine Thang Zawm Hung. The Diocese of Mindat has a population of nearly 360,000, with over 14,000 Catholics and 23 parishes. Fr. Paulinus, a local priest, expressed the community’s determination to rebuild, stating, “We are very sad that our Church has been hit by the bombs. It is a wound in our hearts. But we will not let ourselves be defeated. We will rebuild it.” Following the church’s destruction, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon urged Catholics to pray for those displaced by the violence in Myanmar.
